Real Job?

Earlier today I read a blog post where the author mentioned his first Real Job and that it had something to do with developing computer games.

The term, Real Job, put be off.

I assume he meant his first Professional Job, since I can't imagine what a Fake or Pretend Job would be.  Personally, I have had lots of jobs before my first Professional Job.  All of them met Real Requirements, took Real Time and paid Real Money.

I suppose though, there is the scenario where a person's First Job is a Professional Job.

What does the term Real Job mean to you?

People assume that my farm is a hobby. They don't realize how much money, time and effort I've put into my farm. It's my preferred job but...Grumpy says until my farm can start paying me (It will!) I have to have my professional job or as many people but it, my real job.

I hate that term too. My hobby is scrapbooking and knitting but my spinning, dyeing, Alpaca husbandy and breeding are my job too. I am a Farmer...hear me roar!

Andrea - You bring up a good point, that I wasn't even thinking about...

Many of us are bootstrapping it and therefore have a day (or night) job that pays the bills and enables the development and growth of the dream (or preferred) job.

... all of these jobs are real jobs.

Thank you for your wisdom. :-)

I jokingly call people with 'conventional' jobs (like my husband, a software consultant) 'real people', but I'm not a real person yet because I'm still in grad school. I definitely don't take it seriously though--I make a living wage, so it's a 'real job', and I like what I do. I think (at least I'd like to think) that a lot of people who would say that would just be joking around like me.

AC - that is certainly a kinder way to think about it. Thanks.

Huh. You made me think here. I'm always saying, "back when I had a real job . . ." but very tongue and cheek-ly. The insinuation is that I no longer have a real job, since I "just" stay home all day and take care of four kids and an on-line fiber business (that just sort-of pays for itself). I know I'm joking, because at the end of the day, I've accomplished more, been busier than and am more tired than a lot of "professional" people I know!
But I'm not sure if everyone knows I'm joking. So I think I'll start catching myself on that one.
Thanks for the post!
